Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a trainee/intern train with my company?

Up to 18 months for non-hospitality training and up to 12 months for hospitality training. Interns are limited to 12 months for all types of training.

Is there a cost associated with AAG services?

No, we do not charge companies any fees to find the best candidates for you, to help develop a training plan or provide support throughout the program. However, a $250 site visit fee is required if you have less than 25 full time employees and annual revenue of less than $3 million. This fee does not apply to companies who have hosted interns or trainees from AAG in the past. This visit is required by the program regulations to ensure that your company is an appropriate fit for this program.

What stipend (pay) should I offer a trainee/intern?

The stipend you offer is up to you, however, we suggest that paid positions be enough to cover living and expenses. Typically, stipends are around $1500/month but can be higher. We do offer some positions that don’t pay any stipend; however, this is typically only for short-term placements or a placement where the trainee/intern can gain invaluable experience.

What differentiates the Intern/Trainee Program from other cultural exchange programs?

The Intern/Trainee Program is a professional training program where students, recent graduates or young professionals participate in work-based training that is directly related to their occupational field and/or field of university study.

What if I am not happy with my intern/trainee?

In the event of a problem, we will try to work with you and the intern/trainee to find a solution. If a solution cannot be reached, you are permitted to terminate the participant as you would any intern/trainee or employee, with suitable documentation.

What are the requirements to use the Intern/Trainee program?

To host an international intern or trainee, you must have proof of worker’s compensation insurance, a Dunn and Bradstreet number and have 25 full time employees and an annual revenue of $3 million or more. If you are a smaller company, we can arrange a site visit for a small fee to ensure that your company qualifies.

What if I find my own intern candidate from a foreign country?

If you find your own candidate, or a candidate finds you, we would be more than happy to help you with J1 Program sponsorship and insurance. We just need to ensure that the candidate and intern/trainee position meets all regulatory requirements.

How long does the process take?

Processing times can vary, but a typical timeline would be one to four months from the time you offer the position to the participant’s arrival.
