Frequently Asked Questions
The purpose of the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is to promote the interchange of American and foreign teachers in public and private schools and the enhancement of mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries. The program provides foreign teachers the opportunity to teach in primary and secondary accredited educational institutions in the United States, to participate actively in cross-cultural activities with Americans in schools and communities, and to return home ultimately to share their experiences and their increased knowledge of the United States. Such exchanges enable visitors to understand better American culture, society, and teaching practices at the primary and secondary levels, and enhance American knowledge of foreign cultures, customs, and teaching approaches.
The Program is a one to three year Program in which teachers are expected to develop professionally. Most teachers are required to stay a minimum of two years, according to the contract which is offered. Due to the fact that schools put a lot of time and energy into bringing international teachers, many are unwilling to hire a teacher for a one year period. As the teacher gains experience in their new environment during the first year, many find that the subsequent years are a smooth and enjoyable experience. Typically, a one year contract is offered which can be renewed for up to a total of three years.
