Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Purpose of the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program?

J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is to promote the interchange of American and foreign teachers in public and private schools and the enhancement of mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries. They do so by providing foreign teacher opportunities to teach in primary and secondary accredited educational institutions in the United States, to participate actively in cross-cultural activities with Americans in schools and communities, and to return home ultimately to share their experiences and their increased knowledge of the United States. Such exchanges enable visitors to understand better American culture, society, and teaching practices at the primary and secondary levels, and enhance American knowledge of foreign cultures, customs, and teaching approaches.

How well do the teachers speak English?

The teachers are screened thoroughly to ensure that they are able to communicate effectively with both students and parents. Teachers are required to participate in several phone interviews, and you will also have the chance to ensure their English ability through their video clip.

How long will the teachers stay at my school?

The teacher will be allowed to work for up to three years with their visa. Schools will have the option to renew the teacher’s contract following every school year or to offer a one, two or three year contract.

Do the teachers have medical insurance?

AAG offers the teacher affordable medical insurance if it is not available through the school. Unless participation in your school’s plan is mandatory, this can represent a substantial cost savings for the school and school district.

What kind of salary do we need to pay these international teachers?

Teachers should be paid the same salary as you would pay their American counterpart, according to the position and their experience.

What do we do if we have problems with the teacher?

AAG is here to support you and the teacher throughout the duration of the Program. We will work with you and the teacher to resolve any issues that may come up. Teachers on this Program are subject to the same laws and regulations as American teachers and should be treated exactly the same.
